Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere when I remove its metadata?
No. The file is read and re-encoded entirely locally in your browser. It is never uploaded to Calcooo or any server.
What is EXIF data and why remove it?
EXIF is metadata embedded by cameras and phones — it can include the exact GPS coordinates where a photo was taken, the device model, and the date/time. Removing it before sharing a photo publicly protects your privacy.
Does this work on PNG images?
PNG files rarely contain EXIF data the way JPGs do, but re-encoding still strips any metadata that is present. This tool is most useful for JPGs straight from a phone or camera.
Will image quality change?
Re-encoding as JPEG at high quality (95%) preserves visual quality very closely, though as with any JPEG re-save there is a small amount of generational compression. For a completely lossless strip, note that pixel-identical stripping is not always possible in-browser.
