Frequently asked questions

Which taxes does the USA calculation include?

Federal income tax (2024 single-filer brackets with the standard deduction) plus FICA — Social Security (6.2% up to the annual wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus an extra 0.9% above $200,000). It does not include state or local income tax, which varies a lot by state.

Which taxes does the UK calculation include?

Income Tax (2024/25 bands, including the personal allowance taper above £100,000) and Class 1 employee National Insurance. It does not include pension contributions, student loan repayments, or Scottish Income Tax rates, which differ from the rest of the UK.

Why is state or Scottish tax not included?

US state income tax rates range from 0% to over 13% depending on the state, and Scotland uses its own Income Tax bands — both would need a separate location input to calculate accurately, so this calculator sticks to the parts that are the same nationwide.

Is this exact enough to use for payroll?

No — treat it as a planning estimate. Actual withholding depends on your filing status, tax code, benefits, pension contributions and other factors this calculator doesn't account for.
